I photographed Soulwax on their mini tour of California just gone and it is fair to say they blew the place up at every gig they did. The crowds went suitably apeshit at each barnstormin’ show and rightfully so. This latest incarnation of the band packs such a punch and is such an incredible assault on the senses that you would have to be clinically dead not to be captivated, enthralled and engaged.
3 drummers, kick ass light show and every piece of kit they recorded their album “From Deewee” with is on stage with them. This, alongside the band themselves who are ridiculously and meticulously tight generates a studio quality sound performance you rarely hear at live shows. Even without knowledge of their music you will still marvel at the sheer spectacle of it all. Their die hard U.S fans who had never seen this version of their favourite band were literally beside themselves. Rockin out to both their killer classics and to the new material in equal measure they were clearly bowled over and blown away. I have seen this show now many times and there is no drop off. It is always spectacular. And the Cally crowds, especially in San Fran and L.A went crazier than almost any other crowd I have seen them play too.
The band are nothing short of explosive and produce a phenomenal amount of energy which in turn generates a ton of joy in their audiences. If you are in the U.K they are performing on 26th May at All Points East Festival . And Despacio is going to be there all weekend too so if you want a serious music thrill ride get yourself down to Victoria Park…its gonna be dynamite!
