#MYLDN (1354) – THE REBELLION STRIKES BACK (PT 3)

Over 1000 arrests have already been made at the latest Extinction Rebellion shutdown of London. Everyone in these shots has been or is willing to be arrested for the cause. The cause is simply to get the government to act accordingly to their own self-declared climate emergency, the emergency that we and everyone on this planet is now facing. ‘They’ (which can only include anyone who has a vested interest in preventing action) say that the XR are being alarmist but they are simply the only ones who are responding appropriately to what the 100% corroborated scientific research is telling them.

What is alarming is not that people are acting on their fears and anxieties but that our politicians are not responding to what they are being told. They have stopped listening to the ‘experts’. But why? They’re not idiots. They must be fully aware of the implications of their inaction. They know what will happen if they don’t do anything and yet still they shunt it. And so that is why it is left to normal people who have realised that we cannot rely on them to do the right thing. We must continue to exert pressure on them and show them that the ‘will of the people’ is to tackle this mutha of all problems. Don’t say you’re on it, don’t pay lip service to it like so many other perceived performance policies, actually fucking do it.. There is no time left to fanny around any further.

The people who have joined the XR are just ordinary law abiding citizens of this country. They are not trouble makers. They are not part of the criminal underworld. Most of them have never done anything like this in their lives. Do you think they wanted to put themselves in this position? Do you think they wanted to bolt and glue themselves to the ground so that they can sleep on the streets? Do you think they wanted to risk a criminal record? Look at the people in these pictures. Kids. Parents. Grannies and Grandads. Disabled people in wheelchairs surrounded by police like they were dangerous criminals. Do they look like wrong’uns? No, they are your friends, your family, your neighbours. They are you.

They just feel they have no other choice. Its this or nothing. And to simply do nothing when their children and grandchildren are petrified of what is to come? How can they? How can they stand back and allow this level of irresponsibility from their government who continue to ignore everything they are being told? These people have resorted to civil disobedience because it is the only thing that is left that might generate a response from our elected representatives. Everything else has been tried and everything else has failed.

And so, it is very easy for people to distance themselves from these activists who are sacrificing so much with dismissive (and inaccurate) generalisations about who they are or where they are from or what they are doing but this is so that they can justify their own inaction.

I have been with these protestors and they all come across as the most decent down to earth caring people you could ever meet. But they are afraid of what is to come based on the evidence presented to them and so they act. They refuse to stand by idly as we head ever closer to a much grimmer future, which can be avoided if we just accept the facts and accept the need to alter the way we live. None of us want to but there is no choice. There is no other option. And you can choose to not believe the science, to not take the warnings seriously, to think that life can just carry on as normal, but it can’t. And this is going to happen regardless of whether you accept that or not.

#MYLDN (1352) – THE REBELLION STRIKES BACK (PT 2)

My day started watching George Monbiot give a speech to a packed tent in St. James Park which is now home to a Rebel village of sorts. I read ‘Heat’ by Monbiot when it came out in 2007 and it all made perfect but horrific sense and knew there and then we had to change the way we lived. In the book he was calling for a 90% reduction in emissions way back then and the tragedy is that nothing of any real significance has been implemented in the last 12 years. 12 years we badly needed to initiate policies that would put ourselves on a sustainable path.

Fast forward to 2019 and we are now in the midst of another shutdown of the capital city because the powers that be are still dragging their heels on the action that is so desperately required. And we now have to resort to desperate measures which means people from all over our country have descended on the capital to enact their right to protest and to implement acts of civil disobedience, not because they want to, but because they feel there is nothing else to try to convince our government to step up action that will be fitting of the climate emergency that they declared is happening.

The atmosphere was incredible yesterday and was blown away by the sheer numbers in force in so many different locations, the insane amount of organisation that has gone into bringing about this operation and the phenomenal amount of people that are prepared to get arrested in order to sustain this rebellion so that it has a great a chance as possible to influence increased and vital action to prevent climate catastrophe.

But if felt so wrong to watch as elderly people are carted off by the police. Decent, normal retired citizens who have never broke the law before and never ever wanted to sacrificing themselves for future generations because they feel there is no other choice.

Each time the rebellion has arrived in London it has come at a time when I was most despondent about our future and each time it energises me and gives me hope and optimism that if we continue to put pressure on our elected reps they will eventually step up and do the right thing.

What is incredible is that even though all the banners are brutal fatalistic pessimism the atmosphere everywhere is one of sheer positivity. This paradox is at the heart of the rebellion and shows that we can accept the harsh realities of what’s to come without losing hope, without giving up, without descending into apathy and debilitating anxiety. We can instead join together and create a new path that is not a dead end.

Soz but me posts are gonna all be late this week as I document the rebellion…please do not adjust your sets….The revolution will be televised! (Well internetised but that doesn’t sound quite as good.)

#MYLDN (1352) – THE REBELLION STRIKES BACK (PT 1)

The latest Extinction Rebellion has begun. I was down at several of the sites yesterday and despite some horrendous weather there was an air of resilience and defiance from the rebels who had camped out in Whitehall, Trafalfar Square, the Mall and outside the Deparment of Transport. The mood did however feel more sombre than the previous rebellion but that might have been to do with the heavy downpours but also because things have got worse since the last one and still nothing is really being done.

I got back last night and went onto twitter to see what people were saying and was staggered at the amount of hostility towards the rebels and so many disparaging remarks about the kind of people they were or desperately trying to flag up some hypocritical angle, like they travelled down on a bus that uses petrol to get there. You can dwell on that if you like but that is not the relevant bit of this. It doesn’t matter what these people do in their lives or what their carbon footprint is. They are demanding massive systemic change because they know that is the only thing that is going to save us.

And from what I saw is that that the only thing in common with all of the people involved in the rebellion is that they give a shit and can’t stand back and do nothing whilst our government does nothing. And it does not matter where they come from or who they are. It doesn’t matter what class or colour they are. It wouldn’t even matter if they had green goo coming out of their ears and horns out of their head, they are there for the right reasons and their message is true and correct and backed by the entire scientific community of the world.

You can have a problem with who you think they are or their methods but it doesn’t not change anything. Just like people have major issue with Greta Thunberg because they say she is brainwashed, or manipulated or spoilt or whatever they wish to tarnish her with just so they don’t have to listen to what she is saying. Even if all of the above were true, and even if all the rebels were crusties or even fucking martians, none of this matters. The messenger is not important. And there is no point shooting them because the reality of this situation will not go away if you do.

We need to stop focussing on who is talking or protesting and concentrate on what is being said. That is the only thing that matters, the only thing you need to pay attention to. If you go down to one of the sites across London you will see for your own eyes (and hopefully what I have shown in the above pictures) is that it is just a massive cross section of like-minded people and as this is now a global movement happening everywhere it seems kinda pointless to still be dwelling on who these people are and if they are ‘your’ kind of people. It does not matter. Get on board. They need your support. And we all need to show our commitment to change if we have any chance of convincing our elected representatives to crank up activity and to do what is required, which is definitely a fuck sight more than they are currently doing. They are still subsidising fossil fuels to the tune of billions and billions of pounds every year whilst slashing investment in renewables. And that is NOT the way forward.

Babycakes Romero – Street Photographer (Pt 3)

if you can’t see this vid please click here: https://youtu.be/1RKjVwqTfGU

“Babycakes Romero has the ability to blend into the background unlike anyone I have ever seen. He has built-in camouflage. A chameleon with a camera. You would think he was wearing Harry Potter’s invisibility cloak for the amount of attention he gets. His stealth mode is so finely tuned it actually made it difficult for him to be filmed as we weren’t sure where he was a lot of the time.”

Simon J Levene, film director.

#MYLDN (1349)

And so comes to the conclusion of this photographic series over the course of the last 3 weeks which showed a total cross section of people who are unified in time and space (each shot taken within minutes of each other) yet who seem to share, less a sense of community and more a sense of isolation, despite living side by side. I think often we feel disconnected to those around us because we are convinced we are the only ones who have a non-stop train of fretful thoughts about every single aspect of our lives and everyone else is just going about their business.

I touched on this subject in my speech at my book launch (link here if you weren’t there & want to see) and how the aim of my photography was to show that we are in fact living the same life, sharing the same concerns and if we could just share our internal anxieties (instead of our surface level achievements) we could break out of our separate realities and become a unified collective that would allow us to identify with each other. And this is something we desperately need to be able to do if we are going to successfully tackle the destabilisation of the climate.

Due to the latest scientific findings, an increase in reporting from the media, driven by the actions of the youth strike led by Greta Thunberg and the Extinction Rebellion, there has been a global awakening and even though it has initiated an international movement it has also generated as much anxiety as action. We are all now living in fear of how it is going to affect us and yet we are still viewing it from an individual perspective .

We are all currently trying to do our bit but our individual choices will ultimately not make a difference. Yes, we need live by example and to do everything we possibly can to alter our approach to living so we can wean ourselves off emission heavy consumption, whether it be through transport, meat or fast fashion, but those choices will not save us. Small alterations in the way we live will not be enough. Business as usual is over. We need the entire system to change. We need concrete legislation from our governments to initiate the massive shift that is required. We need to make ecocide a crime so that the polluters have to clean up their own shit and not put the onus on the consumer.

And we need change now. Not by 2050. That is just a generational shunt. This shit is clearly happening in our present, not a far flung future. And the situation is now desperate because we have been patiently waiting for our elected representatives to make the necessary changes that could steer us onto a sustainable path but after nearly 30 years and a relentless amount of stalling it is very evident that not only are they not going to provide solutions, they are in fact blocking them. They are not leading the way, they are standing in the way.

And we do not have time for that. We have left it too late. We have squandered all the time we needed to do this incrementally. Drastic actions are now required but drastic action is not happening. No-one in power is taking the necessary steps. Where are the leaders that will take us forward? We shouldn’t have to appeal to leaders who we need to convince, we should have leaders who want to convince everyone else.

There is simply not enough time to deal with obstacles in the road. Even if we had everyone 100% on board, from the top to the bottom, we would still have to go flat out on everything to halt and then reverse the effects of our emissions but we can’t because weak leaders and the greedy corporate cunts that put them there are preventing progress and we need to somehow get them the fuck out of the way. And the only way we can do that is to take them on as a single unit. We must become a global community than transcends national identity, colour and religion. If we don’t see each other as the same we are fucked.

But with continued discord and division in seemingly every country across the globe it would take something gargantuan to unite us and let us focus on the matter in hand. And ironically the threat of climate breakdown is the common enemy that should be allowing us to put our differences aside and join forces but it isn’t quite doing the job. Yes, there is a growing sense of communal necessity around the world but we need to get everyone on board in every single place on Earth immediately to have a chance in hell.

The only chance we have as a species to survive is to recognise that we all now have the exact same problem and the sooner we can join together sufficiently as a species the greater the chance we have to survive. We all share the fundamentals: we all need to food, water, shelter and people. None of us can live without these things but we can do without everything else. And these are the things that will be in jeopardy in the future.

The next major rebellion begins next week on October 7th. You might think that you are not the same as the people in the XR or do not agree with their methods but rebellion is now all we have. This will not happen unless we take a stand. We need to keep rattling the cages of those in power. And as I repeated mantra style over the course of the last rebellion, if you are anti-extinction you are in the rebellion.

It is not a type of person. It is not restricted to a demographic. It is literally everyone and we have to join together. The XR is not a solution in itself, the solution will be to give up everything we are currently doing, and start again. This is not a case of having our cake and still being able to eat it. The ‘cake’ has got to so we can build a better one. So we can put the human race back on a sustainable path, a path that continue. This one cannot. This is a dead end.

The world we have built cannot carry on in the same way. But you have to ask yourself, is that such a terrible thing? The changeover will be messy but there is undoubtedly a better version of human society than the one we are currently in. One that only really benefits those at the very top and everyone else suffers as a result. I don’t see rampant consumerism, soulless employment, addiction (in all its forms) and relentless anxiety over shit that doesn’t matter working for anyone. It isn’t making any of us particularly happy, so what are we really afraid of giving up? What are we protecting? The pursuit of pointlessness? We know its all nonsense so why cling on to it?

And for all concerned individuals, if you want to show your support for the rebellion you don’t necessarily have to go and get arrested on paint an X on your back. We just need to show them we will not just give up and let them destroy everything. We have to take a stand. And remember, you are not owed an existence. There is no entitlement to living. Nature’s system is designed so that you have to fight to survive. And as much as we feel the laws of nature do not apply to us, we are not exempt. We are going to have to battle for our lives. Just like every other species on this planet.

And yes, I got all that from a bunch of different people mooching around Portobello market…these shots were actually all taken in-between and during shooting my mini ‘docs’ and there are still a couple more episodes to come because, even though everything above is categorically happening, we still have to somehow continue with our lives as normal. We still need to work, we still need to earn money, we still need to do everything we were doing while we wait for the shit to hit the fan, which for me, is the most surreal and hardest aspect of all of this but life goes on..which is, in fact, the aim of all of this…

“Babycakes Romero is committed to doing whatever it takes in his pursuit of documentation. He has no hesitation to put himself in the firing line to get the shot. He is willing to risk everything . He is the Don McCullin of West London. A war photographer on the streets of London, just without the war bit.”

#MYLDN (1344)

All shots this week are part of an ongoing series (which started last week) which encapsulates multiple lives within a moment in time. All taken on the same day and all within minutes of each other. I will explain more when the series has finished (more to come) but I ask you, for now, to think of all the different people you have seen in the photographs in the last two weeks and ask yourself, are we all leading interconnected lives or are we in fact, utterly disconnected, sharing the same temporal and geographical space but experiencing entirely different and unrelated existences?

And while you’re at it, look around you as you go about your day, at the people surrounding you and ask yourself the same question. Are we like seperate bubbles in a drink that just occasionally collide or are we the liquid and all part of the same thing?

Obviously you don’t have to do this. Its not compulsory. I won’t be sending the thought police round or anything so there will be no way to check. This is just an exercise to ultimately to try to determine what is most relevant and importants, the life we live on the inside or the life we lead on the outside? Are we in this together or is that just an illusion and we are in fact alone in our own constructed universe?

Also: I somehow managed to have lost a post. #MYLDN (1337) is M.I.A. It made it on to my Instagram feed last week but it doesn’t appear to be on the pages of this blog anymore which is quite unfathomable and no idea how that could have happened unless I accidentally deleted it. So here it is but if you did see this here b4 someone please let me know so I can avert further madness)

I would love to know what this woman is doing. She seems to be pinching an imaginary handle or measuring something invisible. Or maybe her hand has locked that way in some arthritic seizure and she is pondering what she should do about it. I really haven’t a clue. And I guess I never will. Unless you know or are the woman with the mysterious gripping hand, please step forward…

“This is the first in a series of mini ‘docs’ where we give you a no holes barred expose of the reclusive photographer that is Babycakes Romero. We were granted exclusive access and he allowed himself to be filmed for the first time ever.  We will take you behind the scenes, to show you his unconventional methods, his radical style and will ultimately reveal why this camera shy photographer is hiding in the shadows of his own exposures. We bring you the man behind the myth. The man behind the made up name.”

What do all the shots have in common this week? They were all taken within minutes of each other. These people are connected in time and location and now also by this series, which I will be continuing over next couple of weeks.

I was inspired by the spectacular photography book ‘A day in the life of London’ which was shown to me by my good friend & fellow photographer Alex Schneideman at Flow Photographic. It was published in the 80s and shows this city captured by hundreds of photographers in a single 24 hour period. It is an incredible piece of work and mind boggling how they achieved it. My slightly less ambitious version that I will present to you is the same city but will instead be just 1 photographer taking shots over a period of 2.4 hours, roughly 35 years later & last Friday to be precise.

And as we are talking about street photography books about London (see what i did there?) I wanted to let you know that if you are still looking to get a copy of my book ‘MYLDN – a streetview of London Life’ you can get from direct at my esty store via this link (and also the ‘BUY BOOK’ button on me website)

https://etsy.me/2QfiDmY

I am donating 50% of my royalties to the youth homeless charity Centrepoint https://centrepoint.org.uk so if you get direct from me they will get more. I have featured the dramatic and horrendous increase in homelessness in London over last few years in my book and it is a situation that, once in, is very hard to get out of. What Centrepoint does is help protect young vulnerable people and stop many of them from falling through the cracks and into a life on the streets. You also sponsor a room for a monthly fee of £12.00. (see website)

And while we’re punting books…Alex Schneideman & Hettie Judah’s ‘Art London’ collaboration publication has also been released this week and definitely worth getting hold of a copy if you want a definitive guide to this city’s cultural content providers which also contains some great art of its own via Alex’s photographs. This casual not posed at all verite shot was taken at their launch last night.
