exactly! “regular and reasonable income” is no longer enough. The councils would seemingly rather the city centre was full of empty luxury flats than house Londoners who actually work there. Rent control is the only way to prevent this but for some reason they will always side with property owners/developers than the residents themselves who are the ones who contribute their time/skills/income and taxes. How can you not get riled by this slap in the face?

I now have solid evidence of what gentrification does for “normal” people: a family member is currently looking for rented accommodation in or near Shoreditch. Despite regular and reasonable income, this relative cannot find anything other than a bedsit (sorry, studio flat) for less than £1200 pcm! And they act surprised when folk express strong emotions . . .
